SMS Choir Students & Parents

As we approach “Cabaret” tomorrow evening we also approach one of the busiest times of the year for any musician…the holidays.  As me move into this hectic, but fun time of year I encourage you to keep yourself organized, keep that to-do list handy.  These efforts will help you enjoy the many things that make this time of year great (okay…minus finals).

Peace.

Concert Etiquette

With several performances under our belt I want to underscore the importance of concert etiquette (aka…how we act at concerts).

Four years ago the SMS Choir leadership team and I sat down and developed the guidelines for audience members at SMS Choir performances.  Here are a few reminders:

1. Silence all cell phones and electronic devices. If you get a call and must take it…begin that conversation AFTER you have exited the performance hall.  Cameras that “beep” as they are about to take a picture.  Snap that shot BETWEEN SONGS.

2. Food and Drink is to be consumed outside of the performance hall.

3. Crying children, like good intentions, should be carried out as quickly as possible.

4. If you must enter or leave while the performance is in progress, do so between and not during a song.

Thank you for respecting the hard work of our Shawnee Mission South Choirs!

Evening of Cabaret

§ Cabaret Set-Up – we still have several positions for both parents and students to assist with Cabaret.  Students can sign-up in the choir room (helping with this event earns choir letter points).  Parents sign-up by contacting Linda Alley, Cabaret Co-chair, lsgalley@yahoo.com

§ Accompanist payment – Students utilizing Mr. Leatherman as an accompanist for Cabaret must pay for those services.  DIFFERENT FROM YEARS PAST students will not pay Mr. Leatherman directly, but turn money into the booster club, who will reimburse Mr. Leatherman.  (see the new procedure for turning in money below).  The fee for accompanist fee for Cabaret is $20.00.

§ An Evening of Cabaret – tomorrow, Friday, November 20, 2009, 6:30p, SMS Cafeteria.  Tickets: $6 in advance, $7 at the door, $5 for students and seniors.  For more info: www.smschoir.com/Cabaret2009.htm

§ While Cabaret doesn’t feature performances of every choir student proceeds from the event benefit every choir student.  Events like Evening of Cabaret are great performance opportunities as well as fund raisers.  They also help prevent the entire choral department from having to sell cookie dough, entertainment books, trash bags or the like.  I hope that everyone finds a way to plug-in and help.

NEW: Procedure for turning in $$

In an effort to track and organize finances our choir boosters treasurer, Linda Kana, has come up with an outstanding system for doing just that.  The following procedure will be followed for turning in money:

1.  Student will obtain a SMS Choir Money Envelope

2.  Completely and legibly fill out the information requested (Name, Amount, What the funds are for)

3.  Students will place their envelope in the cash box in Cates’ office.

Other money stuff:

§   All checks should be made payable to “SMS CHOIR”

§   It is helpful for the memo to also reflect the students’ name and what the check is for.

§   A receipt will be issued by request to the treasurer, Linda Kana, Treasure@smschoir.com

Masterwork Solo Auditions

Our annual Masterworks concert features the band, choir and orchestra on one concert.  The performance also features a soloist from each department accompanied by the SMS orchestra.  Auditions for these three solo spots will take place Monday, November 23 at 3p in the Choir Room.

SMS Choir Hosts NE Kansas District Choir Fest.

Each year SMS hosts the Kansas Music Educators Association, North East Kansas All-District Choir Festival.  This is a HUGE event, bringing over a thousand singers, teachers and audience members to our school.

The festival is Saturday, December 5, all-day at SMS.  We will be asking for student and parent volunteers to help with the event.  This is also an awesome chance for a student to earn LETTER POINTS!

Decorations for Holiday 09’

On Sunday, December 6, from 3-5p we will be “decking” the auditorium for Holiday 09’ A Celebration of Traditions and Cultures.  SMS Choir’s Annual Holiday Concert.

We will need the following items:

§  White Lights (with green chords)

§  Pillow stuffing/fake snow

§  Artificial Trees

§  Extension Chords

§  Power strips

Bring any of these items to the set building day on Dec. 6.  If you’d like any items returned please mark them clearly with your name.

SMS Choir Students & Parents

WOW!  Congrats to ALL SMS Choirs on an OUTSTANDING fall concert!  We performed with superior musicianship, poise and above all heart for our music.  The only problem with having such an awesome fall concert is that we have set the bar extremely high for the rest of the year (that’s a good problem J).  However, I’m confident that this year will be full of outstanding performances!

There were a host of students and parents who contributed their time and efforts to make our fall concert a success, but, I wanted to thank a few in particular:  First, Matt Brooks, AJ Walaszek and Ben Taylor for setting up sound and recording equipment.  Next, Mrs. Rebecca Floyd for providing decorations for the stage.  And finally, Mrs. Linda Kana, Mrs. Lisa Carson and Mrs. Christie Brooks for their countless ours working on robes, tuxes and formal dresses for our choirs; You helped us look as good as we sounded!

Peace.
Cates

SMS Choir Students & Parents

Musical rehearsal, community and school performances, Cabaret auditions and MUCH more!  Yep, the 09/10 SMS Choir year is underway.  In the midst of all of the “stuff” that we do I encourage us all, myself included, to savor each moment; To enjoy and make the most of each rehearsal, performance or audition…we never get that instant back.

While most of the year is very busy, October-December always seems to be particularly hectic for SMS Choir.  I encourage you to stay organized, make a to-do list, do the most difficult thing first (it won’t stress you out once its done) and set reminders in your cell phone.

With a little bit of organization and a lot of hard work and fun I’m confident that this will be an AWESOME year!

Peace.
Cates
